THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INDUSTRIAL UNITED STATES (1870-1900)
This period focuses on the convergence of Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans starting in the late 15th century when the Columbian voyages began, and the resulting global transfer of plants, animals, diseases, people, and ideas known as the Columbian Exchange. The study of primary source maps from this period allows students to analyze and compare the worldviews of people in these different parts of the world, including those of Europeans who created and used maps to reach, explore, and colonize the Americas. Meanwhile, modern maps and graphs support analysis of demographic and cultural contexts across societies, as well as the demographic and ecological consequences of the Columbian Exchange.
