CODAP

The Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP) is a free, open-source, web-based app designed to encourage inquiry, exploration, and learning from data in any content area, including social studies. This platform is free and does not require an account or login. The site has several useful tutorials to teach you how to use the site, and you can explore social studies-specific example documents or curricula with embedded activities. We have created a minimal manual that helps students create a graph from a large dataset to explore and compare manufacturing between the North and South in 1860, just before the Civil War. Although CODAP has several functions, this particular exercise demonstrates how CODAP allows students to visualize and explore different variables from a dataset relatively quickly.
