DATA STORYTELLING

This page focuses on data stories as a way to make sense of quantitative information or data visualizations. We highlight both scrollytelling and data documentaries. Scrollytelling is an interactive form of digital storytelling where a narrative unfolds, animates, or updates progressively as the user scrolls down a page. Scrollytelling controls the pace and order in which text and images are presented, but readers still determine how long they engage or the degree to which they interact with certain features. It is a way for students to explore complex data visualizations, and to connect them with specific written text. Data documentaries also translate complex, quantitative information into a structured, narrative-driven experience, but they can more effectively use cinematic techniques, including movement, sound, and imagery to evoke an emotional response, and viewers tend to have less control over the progression of the story.
