William Clark, Plan of the N.W. Frontier (1813)

This map, created by William Clark in 1813, depicts the locations of various Native American tribes and villages, as well as numerous forts and settlements, throughout both the Missouri and Illinois territories. Clark created this map following his appointment as Governor of the Missouri Territory in response to British incursions on the frontier that occurred during the War of 1812. It also reflects fears that Native Americans, who had mostly allied with the British during the War of 1812, would attack white settlements.
