U.S. Census Office, Population of the United States (1864)

This is a snapshot of a table from the 1864 U.S. Census Office report following the 1860 Census. The table shows data from the 1860 census regarding the population of the United States. The table is also featured in another section of the website, where we combined data from this table with data from a table in an 1853 report to create a graph showing changes in population from 1790 to 1860. The original tables, a recreated table, and the graph can be viewed in these spreadsheets. We wanted to illustrate how dramatically the population of the United States increased during this period of history. Because the 1864 report did not show population changes over time, we had to compile the data from the two reports.
