U.S. Census Office, Exhibit of the Total Manufactures of Each State and Territory...,1850 (1864)

This table from the 1864 U.S. Census Office report following the 1860 Census shows various statistics on manufacturing establishments in each state in 1850. We used data from this table and a similar table on manufacturing establishments in 1860 to create graphs focused on changes in the number of manufacturing establishments per state.  We grouped the states based on their role as Union, Confederacy, or Border States in the Civil War. The original tables, a recreated table, and graphs can be viewed in these spreadsheets.
