Smithsonian Institution, Native Languages and Language Families of North America

Among Indigenous Peoples in the Americas were a great variety of languages, all of which served as ways to share and pass down histories, philosophies, and cultures. Although many Indigenous languages have disappeared, many remain, kept alive through the efforts of native speakers who strive to maintain this important cultural heritage. This map provides a picture of the diverse languages spoken among Indigenous Peoples.
