Rand, McNally & Co., New Map of the American Overland Route Showing its Connections and Land Grants of 30,000,000 Acres (1879)

Published 10 years after the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, this is an example of a promotional map intended to increase ridership and encourage tourism. The map shows the railroad and branches in black with the stops as points. Referring to travel by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, the map assures readers that they "Avoid the Sickness, Dangers and Delays of the Panama Route!"  and that with round trip tickets for $38 from Omaha to Denver, Colorado Springs, or Pueblo they can "afford the finest view to be had of the Great Snowy Range."
