John Wallis, The United States of America Laid Down from the Best Authorities, Agreeable to the Peace of 1783 (1783)

Created in 1783 by London mapmaker John Wallis, this map is one of the first to portray United States borders decided upon by the 1783 Treaty of Paris, even though it was published in April, five months prior to the signing of the treaty. The highly detailed map shows state boundaries, Indigenous lands, and remaining French and Spanish holdings. It is also the first British map to show the American flag with thirteen stars and stripes. Other important American icons surround the flag as well, including George Washington walking alongside Lady Liberty, Athena (goddess of wisdom), the blindfolded figure of Justice, and Benjamin Franklin.
