This large-scale map was created by Jean Lattré, an official engraver of King Louis XVI. It resulted from the Treaty of Paris in 1783 that made official the independence of the United States from Great Britain. This map was the first to depict the new nation in full detail. The contents of the map show political boundaries between states and countries, topographical elements, and locations of Indigenous Peoples' hunting and residential grounds. To further highlight the independence of the United States, the map includes an illustration of a soldier hanging the United States insignia on a ship and a dedication to Benjamin Franklin. The margins of the map feature a timeline of the important events of the war sorted by state.
