U.S. Census Office, Rate of Taxation per $100 of Assessed Valuation, by States and Territories (1898)
Several bar graphs from the 1898 Statistical Atlas of the United States, compiled by Henry Gannett, visualize economic data based on the Eleventh Census (1890). They illustrates the rate of taxation per $100 of assessed valuation of property by states and territories, as well as the national debt from 1856-1891. The taxation graph (Diagram 384) also includes the average rate of taxation for the entire United States. Most states with the highest rate of taxation, such as Nebraska, Kansas, Arizona, and Idaho, are located in the West. In 1880 the national debt was about $3 billion, while in 1890 it had reduced to $2 billion. Diagrams 386 & 387 show the debts side by side, while Diagram 388 illustrates the national debt from 1856-1891. The visualization provides context for how Americans grappled with economic and political issues, including tariffs and business regulation.
