This graph, created by Henry Gannett using data from the 1890 census and published in the Statistical Atlas of the United States, shows the proportion of wage earners in the United States by both states and territories. Each wage earner is categorized into one of five groups according to the graph these groups are agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and personal and professional services. The largest of these wage earners groups in most states is agriculture. Some outliers, however, are the states of New York, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, which overshadow agriculture with manufacturing. The smallest group of wage earners among all states falls into the category of professional services.
