This 100% stacked bar graph was included in the 1900 Statistical Atlas of the United States, a compilation of data visualizations created from 1900 Census data under the direction of Henry Gannett. It shows the racial composition of each state's male population of militia age (ages 18-44, p. 42). Each color represents a different group: blue indicates “native white of native parents,” and pink indicates “native white of foreign parents,” with “native white” referring to white individuals born in the United States. Green represents “foreign white,” or white immigrants. Orange represents Indigenous individuals, yellow represents Chinese and Japanese populations, and black represents people of color. The graph is organized with states that had the highest percentage of native white men of native parents placed at the top. This ordering reflects the racist ideologies held by many white Americans at the time; namely, the belief that people of the white race were superior, especially if they were native born.
