Henry A Burr, Disturnell's New Map of the United States and Canada : Showing All the Canals, Railroads, Telegraph Lines and Principal Stage Routes (1850)

During the 1800s, there was a rapid expansion of new transportation and communication technologies that contributed to the interconnectedness and growth of the United States, increasing options for and speed of travel and allowing for easier movement of people, goods, and ideas. This map, created by Henry A Burr, a topographer for the Post Office Department in 1850, clearly showcases this. The map includes all canals, finished railroads, unfinished railroads, telegraph lines, and stage routes in the United States at the time. It also features an inset map of the West and its transportation routes, highlighting  its increasing accessibility.
