Haasis & Lubrecht, The American Union Railroad Map of the United States, British Possessions, West Indies, Mexico, and Central America (1871)

It is often stated that the Transcontinental Railroad captured the American imagination and this map is one such representation of that assertion. One of many maps created after the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, Haasis and Lubrect's 1871 railroad map celebrates the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad by conveying excitement over the opportunities the railroad afforded. The map is flanked by tables with the populations of cities throughout the United States, and on the right is an image of a busy railroad station with people eagerly boarding the train. In the background is a horse and buggy, portrayed almost as if it is receding into the past, and at the top, a colorful picture shows sights people could see on their travels, including the Brooklyn Bridge (then still under construction), farmlands, mountains, and ships in the San Francisco Bay.
