George Washington Bacon, Bacon's Steel Plate Map of America (1863)

American mapmaker George Washington Bacon's incredibly detailed 1863 political, historical, and military map contains a wealth of information on the Civil War from the perspective of a contemporary. On the bottom left of the display are population lists from the 1860 Census, a table of distances between and populations of towns, and a timeline of what he has determined important events of the war. At the top of the map are positions of Union and Confederate forts, and information about Federal Navy ships. On the map itself, "Federal free states" are outlined in red, "Federal slave states" are yellow, "Federal territories (free)" are orange, and "Confederate states (slave)" are green.
