Fletcher W. Hewes & Henry Gannett, Cattle on Farms (1883)

This display of data visualizations was published in Scribner's Statistical Atlas of the United States, Showing by Graphic Methods Their Present Condition and Their Political, Social and Industrial Development. Amidst the urban growth that was nineteenth century America, farming and ranching both saw increases in popularity as well. As populations moved to the West, the Great Plains allowed for more farm land and agricultural production for the growing population of the United States. In the map and graphs at the top of the page, the viewer is able to understand cattle populations in each state in 1880, which can provide understanding of the levels of farming and agriculture across different regions of the country. The graphs at the bottom of the page provide the export and price levels of beef and leather throughout the nineteenth century. Together, these graphs provide insight into the effects of population increases, the railroads, the Civil War, and the advent of refrigeration on the beef and leather industry.
