Data Literacy for Social Studies, Estimated Decennial Immigration into the Thirteen Colonies, 1700-1775
We created this stacked bar graph using data compiled and analyzed by historian Aaron Fogleman, who intended to improve on the work of previous historians by creating a comprehensive source of immigration data, thereby encouraging scholars to further analyze the impact of immigration on the development of culture in the thirteen colonies. Record-keeping in the colonies was inconsistent, so much of the data are evidence-based estimates, but they nonetheless constitute some of the most up-to-date demographic information from the colonies available. The spreadsheet we created contains a snapshot of the Fogleman's original table, a recreated table, and the graph, which displays population estimates for Africans, Germans, Northern Irish, Southern Irish, Scots, English, Welsh, and Other (consisting of Dutch, French, and Swedish immigrants).
