This interactive map, The Invasion of America, illustrates how the United States seized over 1.5 billion acres of land from Indigenous Peoples between 1776 and 1887 through numerous treaties and executive orders , including the 1830 Indian Removal Act. Users can click on any ceded land on the map to see who ceded it, when it was ceded, and the treaty or executive order that caused the cession. The map also includes a tool that allows you to manipulate the time displayed on the map and observe the takeover of the Native American lands. Another feature of this map allows you to layer where present-day Native American reservations are located, and compare it with Native Americans' ancestral lands. The data are based on the maps produced by the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1899.
