This map was created by Egbert Viele and Charles Haskins in 1861 to depict the principal strategic places of interest during the Civil War. This sheet includes 16 total maps as well as tables with information on each of the states. The tables separate the states into free, secession, and other states, recording the population and military forces of each. There is also a table that shows the distance from Washington of major cities. In the middle of the sheet is a map of the entire United States, with 15 maps of specific areas surrounding it. These specific areas of interest include: Key West, the Mississippi River, Annapolis, Chesapeake Bay and vicinity, New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston, Mobile Bay, Pensacola Bay, Galveston Bay, Cairo, Harpers Ferry, Hampton Roads and Washington D.C. The Union used this chart during the war.
