Daniel Paterson, Cantonment of His Majesty's Forces in North America (1767)

This map, created by British cartographer Daniel Paterson, shows the location and number of British forces in North America shortly after the Treaty of Paris. It also reflects the Proclamation of 1763 borderline along the Appalachian Mountains that separated British land from land “reserved for the Indians." King George III issued the Proclamation of 1763 in response to discontent among Indigenous Peoples, who had been important allies in the French and Indian War and whose land was being encroached upon by British settlers moving west. However, the proclamation did little to deter settlers and led to increasing discontent with British imperial power among settlers.
