Why Teach Data Literacy in Social Studies?

Social studies teachers are already responsible for teaching a lot of content and skills. Why should they worry about teaching data literacy in addition to everything else? This module addresses the importance of teaching data literacy to prepare students for informed and engaged citizenship and its central role in supporting disciplinary literacy in social studies. In addition, the module discusses the critical role that social studies teachers play in teaching about data and data visualizations because of their unique pedagogical content knowledge.
