2. Teaching Critical Data Literacy with Primary Source Data Visualizations

  • 13 Steps

Data and data visualizations have been important in human history and are among the many primary sources students can use to study the past. They are also an excellent tool for teaching students critical data literacy skills. Critical data literacy goes beyond basic competencies like comprehending and analyzing data and data visualizations; it includes recognizing data as a currency of power, interrogating and evaluating data and data sources, and considering the ethical issues surrounding the collection and uses of data. This module will discuss the importance of primary source data visualizations, the kinds of primary sources data visualizations students might study in history, and how they can support critical data literacy.
