Augustine Herman, Map of Virginia and Maryland (1673)

In 1673, Augustine Herrman created this map of Virginia and Baltimore using data from a 10-year land survey.  It provided the most detailed map of the area since John Smith's map of Virginia, and attests to expanding British settlment in the area. The map reflects the 1688 Calvert-Scarborough Line marking the boundary between Maryland and Virginia, following the middle of the Pocomoke River until the 38th parallel.  The map pays careful attention to the Tidewater rivers and streams in the area, providing the names of plantations and the locations of Indigenous People's houses, Lenape villages in southern New Jersey, and the residences of the Susquehannonock and the Choptico in Maryland.
